00:00:05:28 - 00:00:07:17
MAK

00:00:07:20 - 00:00:10:02
Courtney
And I'm Courtney. Welcome back to TMC.
00:00:10:08 - 00:00:14:07
MAK
We are thrilled to be here in studio with everyone today as always.
00:00:14:07 - 00:00:19:04
Courtney
So, if you're listening or watching hello.
00:00:19:07 - 00:00:23:16
MAK
Howdy. We have some cool stuff to talk about.
00:00:23:18 - 00:00:24:10
Courtney
Yes.
00:00:24:10 - 00:00:30:19
MAK
Relevant things going on in our community having to do with the Board of County Commissioners. Yes. Right.
00:00:30:26 - 00:00:40:29
Courtney
Correct. Cool. In case you don't know, we have a board meeting coming up April 21st. You can check out the agenda. It's available.
00:00:41:01 - 00:00:48:28
MAK
It is online. Did you know you can also get the agendas emailed to you?
00:00:49:00 - 00:00:54:15
Courtney
Yes, I do. You're probably wondering. Okay, why are we meeting here?
00:00:54:18 - 00:00:59:10
MAK
It's called. Just go. Go.
00:00:59:12 - 00:01:06:23
Courtney
Gov. Delivery. So she couldn't figure out why it was g o v delivery. She was like that doesn't make sense to me.
00:01:06:24 - 00:01:17:13
MAK
Does make sense. It's gov delivery because it's government. But I always want to say go go delivery. Go into my email box. Go into my email inbox.
00:01:17:14 - 00:01:20:20
Courtney
Yeah. Gov delivery. Government delivery. Yep.
00:01:20:23 - 00:01:26:27
MAK
Sign up for it on our website. And you don't have to go searching for write the address. Yeah right to you.
00:01:27:00 - 00:01:27:17
Courtney
Perfect.
00:01:27:20 - 00:01:31:02
MAK
Yes. That was not in our notes, but I thought it was important to bring.
00:01:31:02 - 00:01:36:10
Courtney
Up I love it. I love when you impromptu throw things out there. Yes.
00:01:36:12 - 00:01:38:13
MAK
Delivery.
00:01:38:16 - 00:01:41:04
Courtney
We have a project that has just started.
00:01:41:10 - 00:01:43:06
MAK
This project did just start.
00:01:43:09 - 00:01:50:20
Courtney
Correct. And it's the Hutchinson Island shore protection project. We call it the Four Mile Beach Project.
00:01:50:21 - 00:02:00:05
MAK
We do. This takes place roughly every eight years. Yeah, it's a federal project, right? Yes. So this is the Army Corps of Engineers doing a shore protection project.
00:02:00:12 - 00:02:09:12
Courtney
Yeah. So, what they do is they kind of, like, help reconstruct the dune. They dredge sand off of a off shore.
00:02:09:14 - 00:02:10:18
MAK
Borrows?
00:02:10:18 - 00:02:11:07
Courtney
Yes.
00:02:11:07 - 00:02:12:26
MAK
Borrowing the sand.
00:02:13:00 - 00:02:15:24
Courtney
Yeah, because it eventually goes back into the ocean. Right? Yeah.
00:02:15:26 - 00:02:20:15
MAK
Comes onto the beach, goes back out. It is the circle of sand. Life of.
00:02:20:15 - 00:02:21:15
Courtney
Mother Nature.
00:02:21:18 - 00:02:23:11
MAK
Yeah.
00:02:23:13 - 00:02:33:10
Courtney
And it's important that we do this not only just for our beaches in the shoreline, but also for sea turtles.
00:02:33:12 - 00:02:34:16
MAK
Yes. Birds.
00:02:34:18 - 00:02:35:26
Courtney
Birds.
00:02:35:28 - 00:02:36:16
MAK
Shorebirds.
00:02:36:21 - 00:02:38:23
Courtney
Sure. Yeah. Yes.
00:02:38:26 - 00:02:41:18
MAK
And other ones would be the plovers.
00:02:41:20 - 00:02:42:03
Courtney
Yes.
00:02:42:10 - 00:02:45:25
MAK
Right. We should have somebody come on to talk about the plovers. They're cool.
00:02:45:26 - 00:02:46:20
Courtney
They are super cool.
00:02:46:21 - 00:02:50:09
MAK
Do you know what. Okay let's finish this.
00:02:50:12 - 00:03:00:28
Courtney
And to remember that we have, we have the endangered species are being monitored.
00:03:01:00 - 00:03:10:10
MAK
Yeah. That's that's through permit. So the. Yes. Army Corps, they're responsible for doing it during the project. And then,
00:03:10:12 - 00:03:11:23
Courtney
Before and during.
00:03:11:26 - 00:03:19:23
MAK
Yes, yes. And then I partner in turtle nesting and such. Yes. They they also assist.
00:03:19:29 - 00:03:23:03
Courtney
Correct? Yes. And so.
00:03:23:03 - 00:03:24:26
MAK
What does that mean? The monitoring.
00:03:24:28 - 00:03:35:16
Courtney
Okay. So really there's a construction environmental window that's November 1st through April 30th. Okay. To avoid impacts of nesting sea turtles. Right.
00:03:35:21 - 00:03:40:05
MAK
So what if a sea turtle doesn't live by that calendar? Okay.
00:03:40:05 - 00:03:53:24
Courtney
So if a sea turtle just comes up and decides to lay her eggs in the area that construction crews are working, correct? II which is our contractor, that helps with our.
00:03:53:25 - 00:03:54:19
MAK
Environmental.
00:03:54:19 - 00:03:55:16
Courtney
Environmental.
00:03:55:16 - 00:03:56:28
MAK
Stuff, monitoring and everything.
00:03:56:28 - 00:04:20:23
Courtney
Yes, they actually can identify and relocate the sea turtle nest into an area that would not be impacted by the construction. Right? So that way that the nest is really undisturbed and can do its thing perfect. Yeah. I do want to say the project's funded through the flood control and coastal emergency funding.
00:04:20:25 - 00:04:23:03
MAK
Yes. Okay, I thought so.
00:04:23:05 - 00:04:30:29
Courtney
Which is from Hurricane Nicole in 2022. Right. So while the storm caused erosion.
00:04:30:29 - 00:04:46:28
MAK
I thought this was interesting. Right. So the corps said yes, there was erosion, but the the project we did prior to that held its own. Yeah. Shore Line did its job. But it is time to nourish again.
00:04:47:03 - 00:04:54:06
Courtney
Yes. Yeah. Yep. That's basically everything in a nutshell for that project. Interesting. Yeah.
00:04:54:09 - 00:04:59:09
MAK
And they're moving fast. Right. So they've just started like you said. And they, they by permit.
00:04:59:12 - 00:05:00:07
Courtney
Got to be off.
00:05:00:07 - 00:05:06:12
MAK
Got to be off the beach by midnight on the 29th. No. 30 1159.
00:05:06:15 - 00:05:14:25
Courtney
30th. Yes, yes. That was close. And speaking of projects that are helping stabilize shorelines.
00:05:14:27 - 00:05:19:01
MAK
Nice segue. Good. Right. The Indian Riverside Park living shoreline project.
00:05:19:01 - 00:05:29:06
Courtney
Yeah. And so this project is designed with native materials to stabilize the shoreline, maintain public access and restore critical habitat.
00:05:29:12 - 00:05:48:10
MAK
I know this is cool. We actually did, we did a longer video on this earlier in the year, and we interviewed the project manager, Jessica. Yes. But it's cool there. It looks like little islands of rocks. Yeah. Will out there.
00:05:48:12 - 00:05:49:27
Courtney
Yeah. There's 24 of that.
00:05:49:27 - 00:05:52:29
MAK
Wave action, coming into the shoreline. So they're called.
00:05:53:03 - 00:05:54:03
Courtney
Breakwaters.
00:05:54:03 - 00:05:58:24
MAK
It's it's breaking the water. Yeah, I think I did that. You did breaks the watch.
00:05:58:24 - 00:06:00:08
Courtney
Yeah, she did exactly that.
00:06:00:14 - 00:06:02:05
MAK
Well it's true. Yeah.
00:06:02:08 - 00:06:05:02
Courtney
So there's 24 of them and.
00:06:05:04 - 00:06:08:05
MAK
That's good marketing. Whoever brings that name water.
00:06:08:05 - 00:06:22:10
Courtney
Right, I love it. Yeah. And then they are adding some stone that will be installed at the base of the mangroves to help just keep that shoreline protected. And this project should be complete by the end of summer, right.
00:06:22:12 - 00:06:29:06
MAK
In the summer. And then they'll start planting the shoreline. Right.
00:06:29:08 - 00:06:30:07
Courtney
Okay.
00:06:30:09 - 00:06:33:25
MAK
Yep. Oh you didn't have that in the notes okay.
00:06:33:27 - 00:06:43:27
Courtney
Yes. Whatever Mark said that's happening. Okay. Now I think we're done with shoreline stabilization.
00:06:43:27 - 00:06:51:06
MAK
Yes. But lend a hand right here. We saw it here first.
00:06:51:09 - 00:06:54:22
Courtney
That's creepy. It was creepy, but we both did it. So?
00:06:54:24 - 00:07:07:20
MAK
So if you need a helping hand, we have a lend a hand program. And that's funds that help qualifying Martin County Utilities customers. If that are experiencing a hardship, pay their water bill.
00:07:07:23 - 00:07:08:10
Courtney
00:07:08:12 - 00:07:14:25
MAK
This is a cool project and this is in cooperation with our Human Services department. Yes IT and utilities.
00:07:14:27 - 00:07:18:28
Courtney
Correct. You're killing it today right.
00:07:19:00 - 00:07:29:17
MAK
Killing it girl okay. This is where I thought you were going with the project. Okay. Right. But no, you did not. No. I thought was jumping right into the House of refuge.
00:07:29:20 - 00:07:37:15
Courtney
So this is a project that they've been working on, and it actually is complete ish at this point.
00:07:37:15 - 00:07:40:19
MAK
Ish. You heard it here first.
00:07:40:21 - 00:07:41:25
Courtney
Complete.
00:07:41:27 - 00:07:56:13
MAK
This is an incredible project. So it is I think we talk a little bit about it, but I'm hoping we get to go more in depth with architect and general Services guys. But this is the house. Our refuge is over 150 years old.
00:07:56:13 - 00:08:00:20
Courtney
It's the county's oldest building.
00:08:00:23 - 00:08:10:16
MAK
That's amazing. Yeah. For the record, I was not here when the building was built in 1876. No. Okay. Arrived in 77, 78.
00:08:10:19 - 00:08:12:03
Courtney
Just missed it. Yep.
00:08:12:05 - 00:08:13:26
MAK
I that much?
00:08:13:28 - 00:08:16:18
Courtney
It's a nationally recognized historical site.
00:08:16:25 - 00:08:20:29
MAK
Yes. And I think this is the only house of refuge left in Florida.
00:08:20:29 - 00:08:23:14
Courtney
It is you thought, correct?
00:08:23:16 - 00:08:28:24
MAK
Yeah. And you can tour it. There's so much. Yeah. Amazing history there.
00:08:28:24 - 00:08:30:28
Courtney
It is really cool. It's survived.
00:08:31:00 - 00:08:33:25
MAK
We got to meet the keeper. We did? Kathryn.
00:08:33:25 - 00:08:35:13
Courtney
Yes. Yeah.
00:08:35:16 - 00:08:39:14
MAK
She does some really neat stories on their social pages.
00:08:39:16 - 00:08:41:29
Courtney
So. Yeah, you guys should follow along.
00:08:42:02 - 00:08:43:09
MAK
I do follow them.
00:08:43:11 - 00:08:44:13
Courtney
I know they should follow me.
00:08:44:14 - 00:08:52:20
MAK
Okay, well, you looked at me when you said it. Well, you guys might want to follow along, and we're going to drop the links down in our show notes. But please do tell us more.
00:08:52:23 - 00:08:58:02
Courtney
I was just going to say it's survived over 75 major storms. I think that's pretty remarkable.
00:08:58:08 - 00:08:59:00
MAK
What is the.
00:08:59:00 - 00:09:00:02
Courtney
Location of it?
00:09:00:06 - 00:09:15:02
MAK
Yeah. And it's right on the water. The other cool thing is that we have the weather stem, cameras that some of our select locations. And there is one at the House of refuge. So it does get, a lot of sea salt and.
00:09:15:03 - 00:09:20:17
Courtney
Yeah, I mean, that's expected sea water. Salt water.
00:09:20:17 - 00:09:27:05
MAK
Yeah. From the sea on it. So sometimes the lens is not always crystal clear, but it's a it's a gorgeous view.
00:09:27:08 - 00:09:30:08
Courtney
Yes. Speaking of, do we.
00:09:30:08 - 00:09:33:28
MAK
Have anything else coming up about that. No. Okay.
00:09:34:00 - 00:09:37:25
Courtney
Speaking of views.
00:09:37:28 - 00:09:43:19
MAK
There's a great birding excursion. Are you a birder.
00:09:43:21 - 00:09:48:02
Courtney
No. Is that the word a birder.
00:09:48:04 - 00:09:49:14
MAK
A bird watcher.
00:09:49:17 - 00:09:51:10
Courtney
I think it's yeah.
00:09:51:12 - 00:09:54:10
MAK
I like birder. I think that's cool. Okay. I want to be a birder.
00:09:54:10 - 00:10:01:14
Courtney
So if you are a birder or want to become a birder, you can go on a guided excursion, right?
00:10:01:14 - 00:10:02:29
MAK
Join explorer Natural. Martin.
00:10:02:29 - 00:10:04:24
Courtney
Yes, April 20th at 8 a.m..
00:10:04:24 - 00:10:06:08
MAK
I'll say it again.
00:10:06:15 - 00:10:07:02
Courtney
I'll up to.
00:10:07:03 - 00:10:08:01
MAK
Three times.
00:10:08:03 - 00:10:09:12
Courtney
Out of all of how to allocate a.
00:10:09:13 - 00:10:17:26
MAK
Nice killdeer, right? It's a guided birding adventure through a scenic tropical forest right here in Martin County.
00:10:17:26 - 00:10:21:01
Courtney
And it even says it's perfect for birders of any level. It is.
00:10:21:01 - 00:10:22:17
MAK
True. It's a real thing.
00:10:22:17 - 00:10:23:15
Courtney
Okay?
00:10:23:17 - 00:10:27:18
MAK
It's a free event, but you do need to register. And what day again is it?
00:10:27:20 - 00:10:28:21
Courtney
It's April 20th.
00:10:28:24 - 00:10:30:20
MAK
And what day of the week is that?
00:10:30:23 - 00:10:32:06
Courtney
What day of the day?
00:10:32:09 - 00:10:34:11
MAK
It's a Monday, right? Shoot. We can't.
00:10:34:11 - 00:10:36:19
Courtney
It's a Monday. Yes.
00:10:36:21 - 00:10:37:22
MAK
00:10:37:24 - 00:10:39:15
Courtney
All right. You have to go.
00:10:39:15 - 00:10:48:06
MAK
Through the hardwood hammock forest. Looking for birds? Yes. What bird would you call if you were going to call a bird.
00:10:48:12 - 00:10:52:00
Courtney
Well I know you would be calling a crow.
00:10:52:02 - 00:10:56:00
MAK
I would like to be friends with crows. It's no secret.
00:10:56:03 - 00:10:58:09
Courtney
Yes. Okay.
00:10:58:11 - 00:11:00:25
MAK
Go go go go.
00:11:00:27 - 00:11:12:02
Courtney
Oh, look, a crow on its way. You guys have heard us speak about this, but it's very important. It's around month long, so.
00:11:12:09 - 00:11:14:00
MAK
And even into May.
00:11:14:02 - 00:11:16:05
Courtney
One weekend into two weekends into May.
00:11:16:05 - 00:11:18:27
MAK
Right. Wow. Yes. We've expanded.
00:11:19:00 - 00:11:26:17
Courtney
That's fine. Okay. So this weekend it's going to be an Indian town at Post Family Park. 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. drop off your tires.
00:11:26:17 - 00:11:34:26
MAK
Yeah, it's I think this is an incredible event. It really is just one more of those. Yeah. Like, tools that mosquito control uses.
00:11:34:29 - 00:11:39:09
Courtney
And with the rain that we've been getting, it's a good idea to get rid of them.
00:11:39:12 - 00:11:44:03
MAK
The tires. Yeah. Okay. I wanted you to circle back in a minute.
00:11:44:06 - 00:11:45:12
Courtney
Tires are circles.
00:11:45:12 - 00:11:53:08
MAK
Yeah, that's what we did there anyway. Free service from Martin County. And it's for Martin County residents.
00:11:53:11 - 00:11:59:19
Courtney
Yes. Okay. Community movie night at Langford Park.
00:11:59:21 - 00:12:01:09
MAK
This is a home run.
00:12:01:11 - 00:12:04:03
Courtney
It really knocks it out of the park.
00:12:04:06 - 00:12:07:17
MAK
Does you know what movie we're going to see? Sandlot?
00:12:07:20 - 00:12:12:08
Courtney
Oh, yeah. It's Friday, April 24th, 6 to 9 p.m..
00:12:12:11 - 00:12:13:07
MAK
At Langford Park.
00:12:13:07 - 00:12:14:00
Courtney
At Langford Park.
00:12:14:00 - 00:12:15:10
MAK
Where is Langford Park.
00:12:15:13 - 00:12:16:01
Courtney
In Jensen.
00:12:16:01 - 00:12:20:07
MAK
Okay. Yes. Grab your lawn chairs and your blankets.
00:12:20:09 - 00:12:21:03
Courtney
And your loved ones.
00:12:21:03 - 00:12:23:16
MAK
Even your loved ones. Grab them all.
00:12:23:19 - 00:12:26:23
Courtney
The Martin County Sheriff's Office girl team will be there.
00:12:26:25 - 00:12:35:28
MAK
So Sandlot Grill Team loved one. Park Langford Park, correct April 24th, 6 to 9. Like it?
00:12:36:00 - 00:12:39:09
Courtney
Be there or be square. Yes.
00:12:39:12 - 00:12:40:08
MAK
That's it.
00:12:40:11 - 00:12:46:01
Courtney
That's all we got this week. Don't forget to like, subscribe, follow, share.
00:12:46:01 - 00:12:50:00
MAK
Comment. You always forget to comment. Yeah we like the comments.
00:12:50:03 - 00:12:50:22
Courtney
We do.
00:12:50:23 - 00:12:57:05
